Cupping for Cold Season
Cupping is Chinese Medicine’s solution to the flu shot.
Thanks to USA Olympian swimmer Michael Phelps, many people now know of the healthful benefits of cupping for recuperating muscles after a work-out.
But did you know that cupping can also boost one’s immunity?
Recognize that general sensation of malaise and “coming down” with something? There may be some runny nose, head fog, scratchy throat and tight neck, shoulders and back?
From a Chinese medicine perspective, our neck, shoulder and back are the parts of our body most vulnerable to the attack of the cold pathogen. This is why one of the first signs of catching a cold is that tightness in the neck, shoulders and back.
This is when cupping can be super useful. Why?
At this stage, the cold pathogen is still in the exterior layer of the body, and it has not invaded the deeper layers of the body and internal organs. Using the power of suction cupping, we can “pull” the pathogenic influence (xie qi) out of the body and dispel it before it has a chance to wreak havoc.
Cupping also unblocks stagnant qi and blood along the important meridian channels of the neck, shoulders and back. This further allows healthy qi and blood to circulate throughout the body, activating the defensive and nutritive qi.
After cupping, patients often notice the disappearance of the “coming down”, pre-flu symptoms, and feel that their health is restored and immunity is boosted. Patients who get cupping when the cold or flu is in full effect often feel that cupping helps them recover from the flu more quickly and prevent lingering symptoms.
